Endodontics is the dental branch that involves the care of the endodontum, or the space – present within each individual tooth – in which the dental pulp resides (consisting of cells, blood vessels and nerves).

It is necessary to turn to endodontic therapy when a carious or traumatic lesion causes irreversible alteration of the dental pulp, which can lead to necrosis.

When is endodontics neccesary?

Endodontic therapy is sometimes used when, preparing a tooth for prosthetic purposes, the reduction of dental tissue could lead to pulp necrosis. In this case the necrosis is due to iatrogenic causes.

Endodontic therapy is divided into orthograde and retrograde.
